Does Stripe work in Kazakhstan? Five setups that do

Not directly. As of October 2026 Kazakhstan isn't among the 51 countries on Stripe's availability list, so a Kazakh LLP can't open a Stripe account. Founders take card payments through a company in a supported country, most often a US LLC or C-Corp, or use a local or merchant-of-record alternative. Here are five setups and the paperwork each one brings.

In short

  • Stripe's list of supported countries has 51 entries as of 21 October 2026. Kazakhstan and Russia aren't on it.
  • Opening an account with someone else's details or a borrowed foreign address breaks Stripe's terms. When verification fails, Stripe can stop payouts and close the account.
  • The usual fix is a US company. Stripe Atlas forms a Delaware C-Corp or LLC for $500, including the first year of registered agent.
  • The money then reaches your Kazakh LLP under a contract. Above $50,000 that contract needs a registration number from the bank before work starts.

Why Stripe doesn't work with a Kazakh company

Stripe onboards businesses only in the countries on its availability page. On 21 October 2026 the list had 51 entries, from Australia to the United States, with India and Indonesia in preview. Kazakhstan isn't there, and Stripe doesn't serve users located in Russia, Belarus or Ukraine at all. What counts is where your business is legally based. Stripe checks the company documents, the tax ID, a payout bank account and the identity of the owners and the representative.

Selling to customers in Kazakhstan is a separate question. Once your company sits in a supported country, it can sell to customers anywhere, Kazakhstan included.

Setup 1: a US LLC or Delaware C-Corp

This is the most common route for founders from Kazakhstan. Stripe Atlas costs $500 and covers Delaware incorporation, the EIN application and the first year of registered agent; after that the agent costs $100 a year. You can also form the company through an agent in Delaware or Wyoming. An LLC is cheaper to run, while a C-Corp suits founders who plan to raise venture money. What the US company brings with it:

  • a US business bank account for payouts. Mercury, for example, doesn't list Kazakhstan among prohibited countries as of October 2026, but no bank guarantees approval;
  • a US phone number, which Atlas asks for when you activate Stripe payments;
  • annual US filings: a foreign-owned single-member LLC files Form 5472, and missing it costs $25,000; a Delaware LLC pays $400 a year from 2026.

One hard stop: since 7 June 2022 US providers may not form companies or keep the books for people located in Russia. Location counts, not citizenship. We set up the US side and the Kazakh side together under US company and Stripe.

Setup 2: a company in another Stripe country

A UK, EU or UAE company can also hold a Stripe account. Each comes with its own residence and substance rules, local accounting and a local bank account. It makes sense when you already have a reason to be there: a team, customers or investors. If Stripe is the only reason, compare the yearly running costs first, because accounting and filings abroad don't stop when sales do.

Setup 3: a merchant of record

Some platforms sell your software in their own name, collect the card payment and the sales taxes, and pay you out. Your Kazakh LLP then has one foreign customer, the platform, and one contract to keep on record. Before you build on one, check whether its seller country list includes Kazakhstan on the day you sign up, and compare its fee, which is usually higher than plain card processing.

Setup 4: local acquiring for the Kazakh LLP

Kazakh banks and payment providers connect internet acquiring and payment links for an LLP, and some of them work with a non-resident director. It suits sales in tenge to customers in Kazakhstan. For a subscription product sold worldwide, check the currencies, recurring billing and how foreign cards are handled before you commit.

Setup 5: invoices and bank transfers

For business clients, an invoice from your Kazakh LLP paid by bank transfer often does the job without any processor. Currency control still applies: an export contract above $50,000 needs a registration number from your bank before either side starts performing, and since April 2026 the number must appear in payment orders. Details are in our currency control guide.

How Stripe revenue reaches Kazakhstan

Stripe pays out to the US company's bank account. From there the money moves to your Kazakh LLP under a real contract, for example for development services or a software licence. On the Kazakh side treat it as an export contract:

  • above $50,000, get the registration number before work starts;
  • bring the proceeds home by the deadline the contract sets, because a court can fine 20% of the amount that didn't come back;
  • record the invoices in the LLP's books and, if it is VAT-registered, in its VAT returns.

If you own the US company personally and you are a Kazakh tax resident, the stake has to be declared in Kazakhstan. Controlled foreign company (CFC) rules can tax a foreign company's profit in the owner's hands, but for 2026–2027 the USA is on the Finance Ministry's list of treaty countries excluded from the CFC definition (Order No. 121), so a US company is generally not a CFC. For a Wyoming company this is not settled, because Wyoming is also on Kazakhstan's list of low-tax jurisdictions. Check this with your accountant before you decide who owns what. The Kazakh side of these flows is what our bank account and currency control work covers.

Common questions

Can I open a Stripe account with a Kazakh LLP?

No. Stripe signs up only businesses based in supported countries, and Kazakhstan isn't one as of October 2026. The LLP can still receive money from your own foreign company that uses Stripe, under a contract.

Is Stripe Atlas available to residents of Kazakhstan?

Stripe doesn't publish a country list for Atlas and says startups from over 175 countries have used it. Kazakhstan isn't named as excluded, but Stripe reviews each application, and people located in Russia are out of scope.

Can a Russian citizen living in Kazakhstan use Stripe through a US company?

Where you live matters more than your passport: Stripe and US formation providers restrict people located in Russia. A Russian citizen based in Kazakhstan can apply, but expect deeper checks, and no bank or processor guarantees approval.

How long does the US setup take?

Delaware incorporation through Atlas usually takes 1–2 business days for an LLC. The EIN takes longer when the founder has no US Social Security number, but Atlas companies can accept US card payments before it arrives.

What does Stripe ask a US company for?

The legal name and tax ID matching the IRS letter, a business bank account in the company's name, and identity documents of the owners and the representative. The business name on the documents must match the name registered with the IRS exactly.
